Steve and Christopher Kawall – Changing the way we live one lime at a time

There are many citrus farmers on the banks of the Pomeroon River, many of who have acres upon acres of lime, orange, grapefruit and tangerine trees. My brother and I too are in to the citrus farming and we understand the plight of many farmers when it comes to finding markets for their produce.

So, why not try adding value to our citruses as opposed to selling the fruit for a few cents on the dollar? We import so many beverages from our neighboring countries, much of which are unhealthy and full of added sugars and GMO. Christopher and I decided to address this question decided that we would start our own local brand of limejuice and create a new outlet for citrus farmers to sell their produce. A lot of farmers grow lime so the decision to start with limejuice as opposed to other citruses was obvious. Christopher and I decided to endeavor in such a project to showcase what agro-producers can do by bringing to the Guyanese populace, and hopefully to the rest of the Caribbean, a quality and unique product straight out of the Pomeroon.

       A green initiative

The carbon footprint or environmental impact would be almost nonexistent as the manufacturing process will provide waste materials suitable to create a compose heap which would be further benefit farming activities.

    Employment opportunities

Once implemented and fully operational this project will enable great benefits for the community of Bonsika by the creating employment opportunities and riverine farmers would gain another outlet for their citrus produce.

A healthy option

A lot of people don’t know the health benefits of lime (or lemon).  Limes deserve to be in the limelight. They originated in Southeast Asia but now we grow them in our backyards. Their potential uses go far beyond tacos and cocktail garnishes. You might be surprised by the many unique ways that limes can be used to benefit your body.

As natural health approaches become more and more popular in today’s culture, limes will likely play an increasing role in the treatment that doctors recommend. Scientists are researching ways to incorporate limes into medicines and herbal formulas.

Sickle cell solution

Sickle cell anemia is a condition that causes the bone marrow to produce misshapen, sickle-shaped red blood cells. It can cause chronic fatigue as well as painful episodes, called crises, which can affect the chest, joints, or lower back.

Keep your heart in lime

Antioxidants keep your arteries healthy, and healthy arteries are essential for carrying blood from your heart to the organs of your body. Lime peel and limejuice contain antioxidants that slow down the process of atherogenesis, the buildup of plaque on artery walls.

A little can go a long way

Lime’s bacteria-fighting abilities also enable the fruit to fight cholera. Bacteria that cause cholera often travel in food. So to all you food lovers out there - have our refreshing limejuice with your meal.

A blast of important vitamins and minerals

Similar to other citrus fruits, lime offers a plethora of vitamins and minerals, including potassium. Potassium is important for maintaining nerve function and healthy blood pressure levels. The fruit is also linked to antioxidants and bioflavonoids that researchers believe could lower the likelihood of cancer.

There are many ways to put limes to use and we decided to take limes and make limejuice for everyone to enjoy. We have already identified an area for the Green Swank House (solar powered). It's a old wooden structure on our farm that needs a bit of renovation but will work just fine once refurbished - Materials. While my brother and I are pretty good with our hands, we will need some assistance in getting the Swank House up and running - Builders. Getting the juice out of the limes is a key component in all of this. Although we did consider the option of manual juicers, they might not be the most efficient and effective option and we expect our Pure Lime Juice to be in high demand - Juicers. We intend to be fully compliant with all food handling standards and certificates - Food Handling tools and certificate. The last step - juicing and bottling our first batch of Pure Lime Juice.

Help us reach our goal and next time you’re at the grocery store you may be able to grab a few bottles of Pure Lime Juice to quench your thirst or a bottle of concentrate to add a final touch of flavor to your meal.Thank You!!!
